Vehicle makes in fatal crashes

Every vehicle involved in a fatal crash in the United States, grouped by make. Choose a make to see its models, the states where its crashes happened and how it compares with all vehicles.

These counts only cover vehicles in fatal crashes. They also reflect how many of each make are on the road, so they are not a safety rating or a risk per registered vehicle.

Sorted by the number of vehicles in fatal crashes, which mostly reflects how many of each make are on the road. Makes with fewer than 10 vehicles in fatal crashes are left out; makes with fewer than 50 are marked as a small sample.

About these numbers

What they show

Deaths inside:
people killed while riding in a vehicle of that make.
Per 1,000 vehicles:
deaths inside for every 1,000 vehicles of that make in fatal crashes. It is affected by how many people each vehicle usually carries and how it is used.
With an occupant killed:
share of that make's vehicles in which at least one person inside died.

What they don't show

  • Safety ratings or crash risk
  • Deaths per registered vehicle or per mile driven
  • Crashes where nobody died
  • Who was driving or why the crash happened

Source: NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), 2020–2024. A fatal crash is one in which at least one person died within 30 days. Makes as decoded by NHTSA's vPIC service.
