US road deaths

How many people die in car crashes each year?

In 2024, 39,254 people died in motor vehicle crashes on US roads, about 108 a day, in 36,297 fatal crashes. That was 4.3% fewer than in 2023 (41,025) and the fewest since 2020. That is 1.19 deaths for every 100 million miles driven.

These figures count everyone killed in a crash involving a motor vehicle on a public road who died within 30 days: drivers and passengers, motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists.
